This week was a very productive week for the progression of my first beat story on the Stock and Grain Assembly. During class times this past week, I continued to work on filling out my beat notes along with establishing the type of news story I am making as well as the newsworthy element. I weighed out all the pros and cons, and decided that the type of news story for this specific story will be a broadcast package. I decided this because I believe that this establishment is very visual. I also wanted to hear directly from the community as much as I could, so adding in interviews with multiple members of the city of High Point will be very beneficial. I also finalized that the newsworthy element/message is ‘how/why Stock and Grain is impacting the community and assisting with the revitalization of the city’s downtown’.
Even though I took a lot of time to research and find the right people to contact for interviews on my story, It was a challenge to find contact information. No emails or phone numbers were listed on websites or even other news stories. Initially, I messaged the events manager and community engagement director of the food hall, Elizabeth Yocum, on LinkedIn. I gave it a few days, but she never responded.
This week, I physically went to the food fall to ask for contact information since I was stuck at a dead end. While I was there, I was able to record some b-roll for my broadcast package. I was also able to take a few photos for my slideshow, as well. As I began to ask around the food hall, I was able to meet with the general manager of the entire assembly, Ericka Edwards, and introduce myself personally and talk to her about the story I am doing.
Ericka was super accommodating and even offered me a great opportunity for my story. Not only did she give me Elizabeth’s contact information, but she also offered to speak to me for the story and provide me with a press pass for the High Point Music Festival that Stock and Grain is hosting this upcoming weekend.
Therefore, this upcoming Friday and Saturday, I will be going to the music festival and re-filming all of my b-roll and taking all new photo elements for my slideshow, along with getting interviews, using the ‘M.O.S.’ (man on street) technique that we learned about from NBCU Academy.
I also reached out to Elizabeth and set up an interview time and place to hear from her and about the impact Stock and Grain has on the community and revitalized downtown.
Furthermore, this upcoming week on my own time, I will be submitting my final beat notes document on Tuesday evening and continuing the development of my interview questions for both Elizabeth and the “M.O.S.” technique that will take place this weekend. I will also begin editing my package as soon as I get my footage from the festival.
